Summer on Lake Keowee and Lake Hartwell is what many people look forward to all year long: days full of lounging on the dock and plenty of time outdoors.
Whether you’re living here full-time or using your home seasonally, it’s worth taking a few simple steps to keep things safe around the water and on your property.
On the Water
- Life Jackets: Still the most critical safety item. Even strong swimmers can get caught off guard, especially with boat wakes or sudden drops in depth.
- Storm Awareness: Afternoon storms roll in fast here. If you hear thunder, it's time to be alert and consider heading in. A quick weather check before going out can save you a scramble later.
- Boating Basics: If you're new to boating—or have guests using your equipment—review local boating rules and no-wake zones. Inexperience and speed are often the culprits of mishaps.
- Dock Safety: Double-check electrical connections, especially if you have lights or lifts. Make sure nothing is exposed or frayed. You can always have an electrician familiar with dock wiring inspect.

Around the House
- Grill Placement: Keep grills at least 1 foot away from siding and anything overhead.
- Lighting: Check that paths, stairs, and docks are well-lit, especially if you have guests unfamiliar with the layout.
- Secure Your Gear: Boats, jet skis, and paddleboards need to be properly tied down. Summer storms can kick up wind quickly and send gear drifting—or worse.
- Mosquito Control: Standing water = breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Walk your property after rain and empty buckets, covers, or any other items that may be collecting water.
- A small sign near the dock or boathouse, such as “Life Jackets Required” or “No Running on the dock,” helps avoid confusion and keeps everyone on the same page.

Most of these things don’t take long to check, but they can help avoid major headaches.
