February is here. In thinking about what to write, I got behind the deadline; sorry! You see, according to the website tools, some of you out there are actually reading this blog, for which I am truly grateful. Thank You!
Now, of course, the heat is on for me to write something you will enjoy. And February is a tough month…while the weather starts “see-sawing” to the point where more folks feel comfortable going out on the water, we are still waiting for spring.
February is also about Valentine’s Day. February is about love. So this month, I will tell you a love story.
I do love boats. I’ve been loving boats since I rowed my very first one in a park pond when I was six years old. When Sandy and I were first dating, we frequently rowed rental boats (well, I rowed, and she rode). We had so much fun rowing and riding that we decided to get married. Like many newlyweds, we were “not altogether financially stable”, (translation: “mostly broke”) but agreed that the experience of being on the water took priority over silly stuff like a mortgage, so we bought a little three hp Sears motor to help push the rental boats. After a few more years, like many married couples, we discussed the possibility of having kids, but once again agreed that the experience of being on the water took priority, so we became “not altogether financially stable” once again and bought our first boat loan. That loan was accompanied by a ’17 foot very basic Bayliner Capri. Here’s a picture of me loving on it.
After boat#1, my father-in-law (who was having serious doubts at this point about his daughter’s life choices) sternly predicted that the happiest days of our married life together would be the day we bought that Bayliner and the day we got rid of it in favor of “being more responsible”.
Two children, six homes, and five boats later, I’m still waiting for that prediction to come true. I love boats! And I love the experiences I have had and continue to have with family, friends, new friends, clients, and our dogs- on the water.
I still feel like a six-year-old rowing my ship in a park pond. Happy Valentine’s Day.
I am looking forward to seeing you on the lake very, very soon!
Side note: Sandy & Rob returned home to the Upstate in 1997 - literally with their boat in tow. It wasn't long before they had a lot on Lake Keowee and spent weekends playing and hanging out with family and friends. They ended up building a home and raising their boys on the lake.
